Hello, my name is Dean North and I am pleased to be returning to become the Head Golf Professional at the Carman Golf Club. I return with my wife April, our two children Reid (age 4) & Kierson (age 2), and our new baby coming early May. April and I have lived in Winnipeg, Fargo, and Selkirk since leaving Carman in 1993. April and I have purchased a home in Sunnyside, and hope to become active members of the community.

My career as a golf professional has taken many twists and turns. I spent two years at Pine Ridge Golf Club as an Assistant Professional, five years at St. Charles Country Club as an Associate Professional, five years as a Touring Professional on the Canadian Tour, and four years at Selkirk Golf & Country Club as a Head professional. I bring with me a wealth of knowledge on all facets of the game of golf, and am excited to share it with you.

My goals for the 2010 season are as follows: enhance the junior program, and begin a junior advancement program; kick start a lesson program, which will include swing classes as well as private lessons; and sell quality golf equipment and merchandise at a better deal than rival golf stores.

I believe that purchasing golf equipment should be an experience, rather than just a retail transaction. A lot of golf professionals are getting out of selling golf equipment because some bigger stores sell at a very low margin, and make it difficult for a club professional to compete. I believe the opposite. I believe members should buy from their golf professional, because it saves them money in the long run. Let me explain why:

  • I price my equipment to remain competitive with the big box stores. Anyone can research equipment prices in Winnipeg or online, so I do the work for you.
  • A professional opinion and knowledge of current technology goes into every sale. I do not sell equipment straight off of the rack. I like to work with each customer to get an idea of what their expectations are from a new piece of equipment.
  • Once a customer has tried out a "demo" club on the course, I encourage them to provide me with feedback about the look and feel of the club.
  • The next step is to go out together and try the equipment. I will provide professional feedback about ball flight, spin rates, and offer an opinion about your golf swing. We will then use a swing monitor to obtain accurate measurements of ball speed and spin rates.
  • Once the above information has been gathered, I work with the customer to make a recommendation. The golfer will again go out and use it for a round to make their final decision. If the club fits, then the club can be purchased.
  • Once a purchase is made, warranty automatically comes with the club. If something goes wrong with the club, bring it in and I will send it back for a new shaft, or head, or whatever may be required.
  • My belief is that when you factor in competitive pricing, travel to purchase and/or for warranty issues, equipment "demos", and professional advice it is cheaper to purchase locally rather than a big discount store. I hope to sell the members of the Carman Golf Club their next experience when purchasing golf equipment.

I look forward to meeting the new faces of the Carman Golf Club as well as reacquainting myself with some past friends. Please pop into the proshop to say Hello, and take a look at the new paint job. I anxiously await the start of the golf season!

Sincerely,
Dean North, Head Professional
